Introduction - India was once famous for its rich diversity, different culture, and beautiful historical places. However, the country's name is being maligned for something much more disturbing -- women and child rape.

Sexual Harassment- Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. According to the national crime records bureau (NCRB), 2013 annual report 24,923 rape cases were reported across India in 2012------out of these 24,470 were committed by someone known to the victim (98% of the cases). According to NCRB 2016 - Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of crimes against women in 1065, of which 557 were rape cases.

According to THOMSON REUTERS FOUNDATION SURVEY - India is the world's most dangerous country for women and minor girls. Due to the high risk of sexual violence and being forced into slave labor.
India has shown utter disgraded and disrespect for women. child rape, marital rape, sexual assault, and harassment female infanticide has gone unabated. The world's fastest-growing economy and leader in space and technology is shamed for violence committed against women and minors.
Afghanistan and Syria ranked second and third in the survey followed by Somalia and Saudi Arabia.

Causes of Rape
According to a psychologist, the kind of sexual violence and brutality and the dangerous kind of behavior are seen, it seems like every second person is a psychopath. If an offender abuse one child, there are high chances of him continuing to abuse other children. Some of the identified reasons for sexual offenses are--
--Sex education is still a taboo in India
-- Minors are less aware of wrongly touching.

--Suppressing and restrict kids make them more curious and they eventually indulge in watching porn.
--Easy and cheap access for pornography.
--Lack of government's policies to regulate pornography.
-- There is violence on the streets and within the family.

In Case of Children- POCSO ACT--- Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012.

The protection of children from sexual offenses Act 2012. It was established to protect children against offenses like sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and pornography.
 It was formed to provide a child-friendly system for trial underneath, in which the offenders could be punished for a different form of sexual abuse which includes penetrative and nonpenetrative assault.
The act also makes it mandatory to report such cases. It makes it the legal duty of a person aware of the offense to report the sexual abuse. It provides special court proceedings that should be recorded in the camera and the trial should take place in the presence of parents or any other person in whom the child has trust or confidence.

Central govt. implemented the pocso act whereby the death penalty will be given to those convicted of raping a child up to 12 years of age.
The central government increased minimum punishment in case of rape of women from 7 years to 10 years extendable to life imprisonment.
It said that in case of a gang rape of a girl below 12 years, punishment will be life imprisonment or the death sentence.
