21 countries in the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) adopted the Delhi declaration on renewable energy in the Indian ocean region. 2nd IORA renewable energy Ministerial meeting held at 2nd global re-invest India-ISA partnership renewable energy investor’s meet & expo in greater Noida.

What is Indian ocean rim association?
IORA is international organization consisting of coastal bordering countries in Indian ocean, established in 1997 to promote cooperation in IOR.
It is regional forum, tripartite in nature, bringing together representatives of the government, academia and business for promoting co-operation and closer interaction among them.
It is based on the principles of open regionalism for strengthening economic cooperation particularly on trade facilitation and investment, promotion as well as social development of the region. IORA comprises of 21-member states (including India) and 7 dialogue partners. Besides, Indian ocean research group and Indian ocean tourism organization have observer status.

What is International Solar Alliance (ISA)?
ISA is an alliance of more than 121 countries initiated by India as most of them receive  the higher amount of sunlight due to their presence between the tropic of cancer and the tropic of Capricorn. The primary objective of the alliance is to work for efficient exploitation of solar energy and to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The initiative was launched by India at the India Africa summit, and in a meeting of member countries ahead of the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris in November 2015. The framework agreement of the Internationa Solar Alliance opened for signatures in Marrakech, morocco in 2016 and 121 countries have joined.

What is the aim of the declaration?
As per the declaration adopted, IORA member nations will collaborate with the ISA member nations to exchange knowledge and share views and potential interests in the renewable energy sector. An agreement is signed between IORA and ISA in October 2018, with focus on joint capacity-building programs, research & development activities in solar energy exchange of best practices.

IORA member countries also resolved to collaborate with International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), they will also collaborate with ISA member nations.
IORA member nations and IRENA also agreed to undertake expansion of Global Renewable Energy Atlas, world’s largest- ever joint renewable resource data project, coordinated by IRENA.

This will help in creating Indian ocean region’s first and most comprehensive map a database which can be used to tap sizable renewable energy potential of region and collaborate on opportunities available under international renewable energy learning platform.

Importance of renewable energy
The world is more dependent on electrical energy, which heavily relies on outdated techniques involving the burning of fossil fuels. This initiative will promote to create renewable energy, and encourage other countries to focus more on renewable energy. Using fossil fuel is one of the major factors behind - air pollution, secondly there are limited natural sources. Renewable energy is eco-friendly, and can be used in limitless. India has started ISA along with other countries and now collaboration with IORA will hopefully provide better results in future.
